We believe the status quo of mattress making is F* up. The volumes of waste are unreal, and there are so many better materials to sleep on.
Many of the mass- produced everyday products can not make any money for recyclers. If only we could find a way to mass produce the same things with good materials, suited for the purpose of the product, and loved by recyclers.
Foam is not a logical material for a good night of sleep. It burns easily, its not very hygienic, and does not manage temperature very well for the sleepers. Most of this can be countered by additives. Fancy additives, with questionable health effects.
So we re-designed the basics of a mattress with an alternative of foam. We did not reinvent any new fancy materials, however the new design doubled the price for materials. Since recyclers love the material, they offer us a good price when we bring your mattress back. So only if it actually gets recycled, the price of your mattress is the same as an old-fashioned f* up foam product. This is probably the reason why only one other company is selling this design.
We don’t sell the mattress away; the sleeper will have to rent, so we can be sure it gets recycled, and we can sell you a mattress for a competitive price.
We design out the short cuts of mass produced products that have no business case for recycling. We call product successful when it is price competitive, and fully recyclable into the same product. So far, these designs have always resulted in better product in many more ways than just recycling.
I like to work on very ordinary and everyday products. I’m fascinated by our relationship with stuff, including our relationship with the unseen impacts on production and waste.
By working on the way things are made, I hope to enjoy these everyday products even more.
